The Zimbabwean Perspective

A look at our lives and the tech we use in them

So what’s the best smartphone camera of the year? Well, it’s complicated.

This time it goes beyond what makes you look good on Instagram..

So we’ve recently been tracking the quality of smartphone cameras in this year’s flagships, especially ever since the iPhone 11 finally measured up to exaggerated claims of iPhones having the best camera among the common public for the past few years. The iPhone 11 matched and last year’s Google Pixel 3, a feat that companies like Huawei had barely just done ever since the Pixel 2, let alone the iPhone itself. However now, well now the competition has gotten a lot fiercer and the crown for best smartphone of the year is definitely not Google’s anymore, neither can Huawei or Apple lay claim to it. Samsung can only dream of even competing with either as the video above will show. In fact  we think we’ve done enough talking, and now we’ll just let a few camera comparisons in the videos we linked here tell you where each camera has it’s strengths.
Now both videos go on to talk about the different color preferences for the iPhone and the Pixel and how each one captures detail differently on different shots . Personally we’re near certain the Pixel is king when it comes to detail capturing and while it’s Night Sight mode is still a beast, Apple has come up with their own worthy competitor and given Google a run for their money here. The iPhone is also still king at taking 4K video, with only Samsung seemingly able to hold a candle to it with the Note 10+. You might notice the lack of Huawei in most of these comparisons and again that’s largely because of the US trade ban again. However we do at least have a linked comparison video of the iPhone and Mate 30 Pro below.
So which smartphone actually has the best camera this year? Well, again, it’s complicated. The general consensus really does lie between the Pixel 4 and iPhone 11. Both which seem to punch each other out to a stalemate. One could argue the Pixel takes zoomed shots and handles lighting better but the iPhone still takes video and has a wide angle camera that Google foolishly left out this year. And again the way that the iPhone has caught up this year is actually very impressive considering before the 11 the iPhone probably couldn’t even compete for top five smartphone cameras of the year. Now it essentially matches and beats both the cameras that embarrassed it the past few years and as such we’re at a point where likely almost any flagship phone has an amazing smartphone camera. Seriously even the Note 10  which gets a little abused in these videos is still an amazing camera to use if you’re not a pixel picking fanatic, the same goes for multiple phones from Sony, LG, OnePlus and Nokia. It’s the Golden Age of smartphone photography again, and it’s a beautiful thing to have regardless of who’s on top(though we still want the Pixel).
Tell us which camera you think is best in the comments and on our socials.
