First Love Review: Just the right amount of emotional stir

Your typical romance drama, but with a pretty decent backing story.

The atmosphere induced by the movie right off the bat gives you that calming sensation of a simple movie you’d enjoy watching after a long day – nothing too dramatic, with a soothing flow where you definitely know nothing too crazy is ever going to happen.

First love is concentric on the story of Jim (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), a high school senior that encounters, as the movie title suggests, his first love with Ann (Sydney Park) at the brim of their last high school year. Overall, the director did an exceptional job in selecting the cast as they portray impeccable synchronicity – from the main actors being the a fore mentioned characters, to the secondary cast Glenn (Jeffrey Donovan) and Kay (Diane Kruger) who were Jim’s parents.

The film attempts to break the ‘cliché’ of a perfect relationship as we see Jim and Ann’s relationship taking a strain right when they consider that they’ll be separating for college. Although Hero Fiennes Tiffin wasn’t as intimate as his usual roles like Hardin Scott in the movie After, the romantic scenes throughout the movie evoke that soothing fuzzy feeling, but at the same time the darker sides exist to balance off the scale.

Running parallel to that main story, Jim’s parents go through a rough patch as Glenn is laid off from his job and has to stay at home and let his wife becomes the sole provider of the family. It proved to be an emotional plot as the typical family structure of ‘fathers provide for the family’ was broken in a lot of ways. Their entire marriage was wavered as they had to make life changing decisions they had never anticipated – like downsizing to be able to pay bills. Half the movie runs with Glenn’s mind in a state of resent for himself even though it was never his fault for losing his initial job. As expected, there were manifestations of jealousy between the couple, it felt like lost love just because of one reason – a crippled budget. Dialects throughout the movie suggested the frustration and embarrassment Glenn had as his wife Kay went to work while he stayed home all day.

While Jim’s parents go through these hard times, Jim in contrast experiences inexplicable happiness with his new love. As fun as it was whilst it lasted it eventually ended when Ann broke things off when she was about to go for college.

The movie is a bit fast paced and at a certain point it fast-forwards two years later, when Ann randomly calls Glenn and leaves an apology for breaking his heart. A very expected turn occurs, which to be frank is what everyone who watches the movie would anticipate, they reunite and make up. And eventually (you probably guessed it) get married.

Chances are you might find the movie slightly cliché in a lot of ways but it’s overall plot is incredibly capturing – besides the immensely emotionally storyline it’s also captured in places with breath-taking scenery. Soooo, would we recommend that you watch it? Definitely!!!!
