So #NIGZIM is how we’re celebrating Christmas this year….could be worse
So this is our version of festive spirit now…

So if you were on social media today (and yesterday) chances are you saw the Twitter war going on between Nigerian and Zimbabweans which at the very least started because of music but has since escalated into everything else. It’s going under the #NIGZIM hashtag an honestly, it’s legitimately hilarious. Here’s the thing though, in a time where we’re supposed to be spending time with our families and loved ones, celebrating the holidays and expecting the new year, does us preferring to start a tweet war mean something is wrong with us?

Now before we go too far, this isn’t a think piece on the adverse effects of Twitter and it’s more toxic nature and habits. There’s a million of those online already and if even state leaders can start a ruckus on twitter and build a rep for it, chances are everyone knows Twitter can be a pretty unhealthy place. But #NIGZIM at least for the most part doesn’t seem as bad. If anything it’s just people from different countries banding together to argue online in what’s honestly the second most form of communication on the internet anyway. Most seemingly did it just for banter as well, making this all a case of people acting foolish online even if it did thread the line between playfulness and a few xenophobic undertones.

But that brings the question again: why are we arguing online during Christmas time of all seasons? Well, one answer could be Christmas in Zim right now is a little weird anyway. 2021 like 202 before it wasn’t the most orthodox of years for most people. Let alone the easiest one, and December hasn’t been orthodox to boot. A lot of us aren’t with our families. Some people are tweeting from boarding houses near their schools, and others just aren’t having the “Ke December” experience that most people associate with this time. So instead we go to the one place where we all get to escape to when the world sucks: social media. And even better, people found a common topic/cause to rally behind in #NIGZIM. Now we could all go and make fun of Nigerians or see them making fun of us and feel like we’re all connected .Is it the healthiest way to go about this? Not at all. But it gets the job done, and for most that’s more than enough. We just hope that everyone reading this gets a little more from their Christmas than laughing at the pronunciation of “Xbox 360”.
