Leaked footage shows Android running on a Nokia “Mbudzi” Feature phone!
Well, this is surprising…
So, does anyone remember those days, from around 2011 to 2014/15 where most of us dumped our trusty Nokia brick “mbudzi” phones for whatever shiny new smartphone we bought (let’s hope it was shiny) because we had to buy a phone that could run WhatsApp? Well it seems that while we all scrambled to our modern smartphones, Google still at least kept plans of future phones in it’s back pocket, as the above footage has shown that it was recently planning to make a version of Android that worked on feature phones. Dubbed “Iron GAFP” meaning ” Google Android Feature Phones” , this is a version of Android 8.1 that would have worked on very low power, non-touchscreen Android devices, with the demo above showing that Nokia device running the Google Assistant as well as showing in it’s settings that it’s Android. It seems the project has been scrapped however as the code which highlighted projects like a non-touch version of Google’s Chromium browser has since been removed from Android releases. This is likely due to Google owning a large stake in and being a contributor to KaiOS, a feature phone platform which runs many of Google’s key apps (and WhatsApp) and has essentially become a very distant third place in the world’s mobile phone operating system market.
