A look at our lives and the tech we use in them

It’s started: Google is shutting down your YouTube videos if you use a browser with Ad-block.

Daddy YouTube wants their money’s worth….

For years now, there’s always been one big reason as to why I preferred watching YouTube in my PC web browser, as compared to my phone : no ads. While the official YouTube app on mobile is littered with ads left right and center (including in the middle of your videos), on desktop browsers, you could just turn on an ad-Block program, and you’d be done. Unfortunately that’s pretty much about to be a thing of the past, as YouTube is completely cracking down on all Ad-block, shutting down your videos if you don’t turn off Ad-block. And well, there might not be a permanent way around it.

As you saw in the first picture and the one above, YouTube can now detect if your browser (mobile or pc, we checked) has an ad-Block plug in or function turned on, and at first, kindly tells you to trun it off. If it notices you’re ignoring it’s request then it basically gives you three more videos to turn off the Ad-block still, before it outright turns off your videos. Which lasts pretty much forever until you turn off the Ad-block.

Why is Google doing this?

News flash: this is where Google really makes money
Well as some of you may know, Google’s whole business is actually ads. They’re how it makes money, they pay for products such as YouTube, Gmail, Android etc and without them, Google would essentially become bankrupt overnight. Even the Pixel Sales, Subscriptions to things like Google Cloud, and it’s other services don’t even make half of what Google’s various Ad businesses make , and that’s why Ads are priority one for the company. As such, even YouTube needs to feed the larger Ad business , especially since it’s one of the biggest distribution channels for it. So as much as they suck, YouTube could never let us ignore its ads forever, in fact it’s even surprising that people with ad-blocks have been avoiding YouTube ads for over a decade now. But now that they’ve decided to double down on it, we might not have a choice.

So is there a way around it?

To be fair, I would have never seen this merch section if my ad-block wasn’t turned off
We all hate ads, so thankfully, yes. Though most of the Fixes seem to be temporary. A quick fix is logging out of your YouTube account and watching ad-blocked videos until it blocks the session, then simply restarting your browser until you start again. It’s not the best way to deal with the issue, and we’re testing some more technical and permanent solutions, but this will have to be a start . Hopefully we can all survive YouTube’s new shift and protection of its business. I personally know I’m having a hard time with it.
